PPC or SEO – Which is the best choice?


Promoting a website can be a difficult endeavor, but it is absolutely necessary in this day and age. There are many different tactics one can use to effectively promote a website, and there is a good chance you have heard of many of them. Two of the most popular methods to promote a website are search engine optimization (SEO) and pay per click (PPC). Many people confuse these two methods because they have the similar goal of getting traffic for a website. However, that is where the similarities end. Probably the biggest difference between search engine optimization and pay per click is the cost associated with the two methods.

Pay Per Click is designed to charge the advertiser for each click on an ad or link from the moment the campaign is launched. Many times you will have to place a credit card on file with the service or deposit money in an account that is debited as links are clicked. The costs associated with pay per click can get very expensive if things are not monitored closely. People have labeled the fees with pay per click as an “idiot tax” because you can lose a lot of money if you do not know what you are doing.

Search engine optimization, on the other hand, is free traffic technically. In other words, you do not pay for the traffic you generate from being ranked highly in the search engines.

However, if you want to be ranked highly on competitive terms, then you may have to hire a company to help get you there. But, you can do it yourself and not pay a dime. If you are successful in ranking highly in the search engines, this can potentially bring in more traffic than pay per click

Difference #2 – Time

Another big difference in the two methods is the time it takes to see results.

Pay per click marketing is immediate. You can start seeing results within minutes of launching your campaign. You will to do some legwork up front. This will include keyword research, organizing phrases, building and landing pages. But, once you submit the order and your ad is approved, you will start seeing traffic.

Search engine optimization, however, can take considerably longer. You still have to do keyword research, build web pages and other similar tasks. But, once that is done, you have to play the waiting game to see results. You have to wait for the site to be crawled by the search engines. Then you have to slowly build links and your reputation so the search engines start trusting your site more. This has to be done slowly so you do not risk being flagged by search engines as a spammer.

These are the two main differences between SEO and PPC. They both can have considerable benefits to them. If you are in a hurry to see results and have the money to spend, then PPC is the way to go. This is a question my group of friends tend to ask each other when we are making decisions about restaurants, movies, or other entertainment. In this day and age, there is so much information available, so many reviews, and so many opinions.
